Medical School Education

PHS conducts a course in human sexuality, (FMCH 7585, Sexual Problems in Clinical Medicine), for first-year medical students to prepare them to offer effective primary care for sexual concerns of patients. This care will consist of providing information and referring patients who require more specialized forms of care.

The course is an introduction to skills important to physicians regardless of specialty. Although the focus of the course is not entirely clinical, it stresses a basic clinical approach to common sexual problems. The student gains a core of knowledge about human sexuality and sexual health as these appear in clinical practice.

It is not expected that students will be competent as "sex therapists" after completing a course in human sexuality. Further learning experiences are available as electives.
