A diagnosis of HIV or AIDS affects people emotionally and psychologically as well as medically. The Center for Sexual Health offers counseling to help these patients, their families, partners, and friends understand and cope with the issues surrounding their illness.
People with HIV or AIDS often struggle with emotions such as depression, anxiety, grief, and anger. Left untreated, these problems can become overwhelming. The Center for Sexual Health offers caring, professional therapists and a supportive environment in which to explore the issues and challenges you’re facing.
Topics commonly explored in therapy include:
- Learning to live again with HIV and AIDS
- Being sexual
- Empowerment and living effectively
- Intimacy and relationships
- Depression, anxiety and adjustment issues
- Changes in body image
- Asserting yourself and your rights
- Death and dying concerns
Individual, couple, and family therapy are available. A psychiatrist and a physician are available to provide supplemental services as needed.
Therapy sessions focus on the mental health concerns and unique challenges associated with being HIV-positive. We provide a safe environment to share the realities of living with HIV or AIDS.
